How to see your kid’s Canvas: setting up a parent observer account

What an observer account is

An observer account is linked to your student's account and sees their courses from the outside: assignments and due dates, calendar, announcements, submission status, and grades the teacher has posted. It's read-only — you can't submit work, message as your student, or change anything. One observer account can be linked to multiple kids, so you only ever need one.

The standard route: a pairing code from your student

1. Your student signs in to Canvas, opens Account → Settings, and clicks Pair with Observer. Canvas shows a 6-character code.
2. You create or sign in to your own Canvas account on the district's Canvas site, go to Account → Settings → Observing, and enter the code.

Two gotchas: pairing codes expire after seven daysand are single-use, so generate one when you're ready to use it; and each child needs their own code — repeat the pairing step per kid.

Some districts skip the pairing code entirely

Districts that run Canvas alongside a student-information portal often link parents automatically, using the parent-student relationships the district already knows.

What observers can — and can’t — see

• You see: each course's assignments and due dates, announcements, the syllabus, whether work was submitted, and posted grades.
• You don't see: grades the teacher has entered but not yet released (“unposted” — hidden from observers by design), other students, or course content the teacher has restricted.
• Early in the year: newly published courses sometimes show as empty or inaccessible to observers for the first days while teachers open them up. Your student's own view is usually just as empty — it resolves on its own.

The real problem: checking it every day

An observer account shows you everything — one course at a time, one kid at a time, if you remember to look. With two or three kids at secondary school, that's a dozen gradebooks and to-do lists to poll. Most parents check enthusiastically for two weeks in September and then life happens.
