MCPS parents: ParentVUE vs myMCPS Classroom — which shows what

Montgomery County runs two systems that both claim to show your kid’s schoolwork, log in differently, and disagree with each other just often enough to be confusing. Here’s the map.

The two systems in one sentence each

ParentVUE is the district's official record: marking-period grades, report cards, attendance, class schedules, and teacher contact info.
myMCPS Classroom is MCPS's name for Canvas: the day-to-day classroom — assignments, due dates, submissions, announcements, and course materials.

Rule of thumb: “What's my kid's grade?” is a ParentVUE question. “What does my kid have to do tonight?” is a myMCPS Classroom question.

Logging in (one password, two doors)

You have exactly one credential: your ParentVUE username and password. There is no separate Canvas password for MCPS parents.

Sign in to ParentVUE at md-mcps-psv.edupoint.com (or via classroom.mcpsmd.org → Login under Parent).
For grades, attendance, and report cards — you're already there.
For assignments, click the myMCPS Classroom link inside ParentVUE. It opens Canvas in a new tab, already signed in as an observer linked to your kids. (If nothing opens, your browser blocked the popup — allow popups and click again.)

When the two disagree

They will. A quiz graded in Canvas can take days to appear in ParentVUE; some teachers keep the real gradebook in one system and use the other loosely. When they differ: ParentVUE/Synergy is the grade of record— it's what report cards are built from — and Canvas is the fresher view of what's actually happening this week. Neither being “behind” is a malfunction; they're different books kept by the same teacher.

Also worth knowing

Early in the year, ParentVUE courses show no grade until the first assignment is graded — and a percent with no letter for weeks after that is normal. More in ParentVUE grades not updating?
In Canvas, teachers can grade work without releasing scores — hidden from parents until posted, by design.
Each parent has their own ParentVUE account; your kids appear on the account the school linked them to. If a system shows no students, the kids may be linked to your co-parent's account.

The third stream: email

Plenty of what you need never enters either system — it arrives as email: teacher newsletters, ParentSquare notices, PTA announcements, permission slips, picture day. A complete picture of the school week means watching ParentVUE, myMCPS Classroom, and the inbox. That's three places to check per kid, per day.
