ParentVUE grades not updating? Here’s what’s actually happening

ParentVUE shows the teacher’s gradebook — on the teacher’s schedule

ParentVUE isn't a live feed of your kid's work. It shows what the teacher has entered into the district gradebook (Synergy), and teachers enter grades on their own rhythm — some nightly, some weekly, some in a batch before progress reports. A quiz taken Tuesday routinely shows up the following week. That gap is the single biggest source of “ParentVUE isn't updating” worry, and it's not a sync problem — there is simply nothing to sync yet.

Early in the year, empty is normal

For the first weeks of a term, many courses show no grade at all — nothing has been graded yet. And when the first grade lands, you'll often see a bare percent (say, 100) with no letter attached. That's also normal: a letter grade only appears once the course's grading scheme kicks in, which in many districts takes weeks. One graded assignment producing a scary-looking 60% average is a statistics problem, not an academic one.

Canvas and ParentVUE are different books

If your district also uses Canvas (in MCPS it's called myMCPS Classroom), an assignment can be graded in Canvas days before that grade appears in ParentVUE — or the teacher may keep the official grade only in one of the two. When the numbers disagree, neither is “wrong”; ParentVUE/Synergy is the grade of record, and Canvas is where the day-to-day work lives.

Some grades are entered but hidden

Teachers can grade work without releasing the scores — in Canvas this is an unposted grade, and it is invisible to parents by designuntil the teacher posts it, usually so a whole class's results release at once. So “my kid says it was graded but I can't see it” is often literally true for both of you.

When it’s worth emailing the teacher

• A grade for work your kid handed in weeks ago still shows as missing — especially if it's dragging the course average down.
• The course average changed sharply and nothing new appears in the assignment list explaining it.
• Mid-quarter and the gradebook is still completely empty while classmates' families can see grades.

A short, factual note works best: “ParentVUE shows the Chapter 2 quiz as missing for Maya, but she believes she turned it in on the 12th — could you take a look when you get a chance?”
